Can anyone tell me the meaning of the first name Kien?

I have heard it as a girl's name, and would love to know its meaning and origin. Any help would be great!

Can anyone tell me the meaning of the first name Kien?
There are 2 girls names that are very similar to "your" Kien.

The first being "Kienalle" which is of American origin, meaning "light"

The second being "Kienna" No origin found for this one but apparently means "brash"

Hope this helps. xxx
Reply:Kian is actually a boy's name. There are several histories of it (it has been used in several cultures and likely has several meanings). Here's a link to the Welsh version.

My ex-bf in high school had the name Kian (not Kien) for a middle name. His family was from Northern England, so my guess is that it is still used.
Reply:A very quick search shows no real origin or meaning to the name. It seems to be part of a last name, also as a name that showed up in a census in Australia.
Reply:I've never heard of it and assumed it was a boy's name as well.
Reply:I'm not sure how to pronouce it, and when I first saw it I immediately thought of a boy, not a girl!

From the Latin Iosephus, which was from the Greek 螜蠅蟽畏蠁慰蟼 (Iosephos), which was from the Hebrew name 讬讜止住值祝 (Yosef) meaning "he will add". In the Old Testament Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob. What is the meaning to the name Aislyn?

A lot of names have a meaning behind them. Example Coa means warrior in Hawaiian.

What is the meaning to the name Aislyn?
The meaning of the name Aislyn is derived from a Gaelic expression meaning 'vision' and/or 'dreams'. It is also considered a variant of the Irish and Gaelic name Aisling, which has the name meaning.

The name Aisling is pronounced ASH-ling (in fact, the

'English' or 'pheonetic' version of this name is spelt Ashling), so I would assume that Aislyn is pronounced ASH-lin. I think that the phoenetic spelling of Aislyn is Ashlynn.

It's quite an unusual and pretty name, as I rarely hear the name Aisling or any of it's variants. I'm surprised that the name is not more common as it does follow some popular naming trends (e.g. it shares the sound 'Ash' with the name Ashley and the 'lynn' sound with trendy names like Caitlin and Madelyn). It is a nice, refreshing name without being to odd. I really like it.
Reply:Aislyn means spirit.
Reply:Ashling, Aislin, Aislinn (Pronounced Ash-ling)

From aislinge which means "a vision" or "a dream," Aisling is the name given to a popular poetic genre from the 17th and 18th centuries in which Ireland is personified as a beautiful woman in peril.

A very popular name in Ireland now.

http://www.babynamesofireland.com/pages/... you can hear the pronounciation there too
Reply:Aislyn is a variant of Aisling, which is Irish and means "dream". I really like the name.

By the way your name meaning and/or origin will be posted as an edit if you want me to look it up!

Do you know your name's meaning and origin?
My name is Candace and I just looked it up...it's English and it means "Queen of Ethiopia" HA! That's great, thanks for this question.

My daughters are Allison, which is German meaning "Little Alice"; Emily, which is English meaning " To Strive Or Excel Or Rival"; Megan, which is Welsh meaning 'pearl'; and Celia, which means "heaven" in Latin.

Thanks for the question - I didn't know most of these!
Reply:My name is Emily and I've heard it means "artistic" but for some reason I don't think it's true. If anyone knows the meaning (with a source) I'd be happy to hear it. Also, the origin...I think it's Latin, but I'm not sure. Usually unique or ethnic names are the ones people are most interested in finding out the meaning. Common names like Emily, Sarah, Jessica, etc...no one bothers with the meaning, lol. Like, if you introduce your new baby and say, "Her name is Elizabeth", people will say something like, "How nice..." But if you say, "Her name is Aoibheann (Irish: "Eee-veen")" people are going to ask you, "Wow, what does THAT mean?"

EDIT: lolol @ "elf army"!
Reply:My name is Megan and I've actually never known the origin or meaning, but I just looked it up. It's Greek for Pearl and Welsh for Little Pearl. So then I was all happy thinking "Aww I'm so glad it has a nice meaning", until I looked up my middle name Marie and found it, it means Bitter in Hebrew. But it's a French form of Mary too. =)

Good question btw!
Reply:Yes Elizabeth - it's a Hebrew name from the Bible which means something like "my God is an oath" OR "my God is abundance".

Like many of these ancient Bible names, they are so old that it is not entirely sure what they actually mean.

What is the origin and meaning of my last name?

my last name is Rankin and i am curious about the origin and the meaning of my last name.

What is the origin and meaning of my last name?
Here is one possible origin of your name.

Surname: Rankin

This long-established surname is of early medieval English and Scottish origin, and was developed from the medieval male given name "Rankin", a diminutive form of the given name "Rand(e)", with the hypocoristic suffix "-kin". Rand itself is a short form of any of the various (originally) Germanic compound personal names with the first element "rand" (shield) rim, such as Randolf, with the second element "wolf", wolf. The diminutive form of the name is first recorded in Scotland, where Rankin de Fowlartoun is mentioned in Charters of the Royal Borough of Ayr in 1429. Early examples of the surname include: Reginald Ranekyn (1296, Sussex); Ralph Rankin (1301, Yorkshire); John Randekyn (1381, Suffolk); and in Scotland, John Rankyne, burgess of Glasgow in 1456. The surname has a long history in Scotland; it was found early in Ayrshire, where persons of the name were "small proprietors" before the end of the 16th Century. One John Rankin was vicar of Girwane in 1504, and another John Rankin was vicar of Girwane in 1504, and another John Rankin was a tenant under the bishop of Aberdeen in 1511. The christening of Jon(athan), son of Paull Rankin, was recorded at the Church of St. Nicholas, Aberdeen, on May 12th 1657. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Gilbert Reynkyn, which was dated 1273, in the "Hundred Rolls of Kent", during the reign of King Edward 1, known as "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 - 1307.

This name may be derived from the Danish Rank, right, upright, erect. If the name is Gaelic, it would come from Roinn, a promontory, share, or division, and Ceann, head; the head of the promontory, a name of place. Ranken, in the Dutch, signifies pranks, tricks.
Reply:Please do not be confused by the earlier poster, and info about Samuel Rankin.

Unless you do your own family, nothing proves that every Rankin in the US is going to be descended from him, just because he is the earliest one they have found. Your ancestor may have been someone else entirely, who came to the US, a hundred years after his.

Until you know for certain, WHO your ancestor is.. you cannot assume that he comes from the same place as someone else.
Reply:English Patronymic name from the early given name Raedwulf, which means 'shield wolf.' It was popular in England before the Norman Conquest. The name eventually became Radulf. Randolph and Randall are among the derivatives.

Rankin is the 1,006th most common name in the United States.

Our earliest known Rankin ancestor is Samuel Rankin. He was born in Ohio in the late 1700s and eventually settled in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana abt. 1818. His ancestors probably came from Ireland or Scotland.

What is the Hungarian origin/meaning of the name "Personey"?

I think the name was originally pronounced Par-shone-lee or Par-jone-lee. I have no idea what the spelling was. But an ancestor from Hungary came over and changed to name or it was changed for him.

What does it mean? Where in Hungary did it come from?

What is the Hungarian origin/meaning of the name "Personey"?
If it was originally a Hungarian name, it's been pretty thoroughly mangled. The -ee ending, which would be spelled -i or -y in a Hungarian name, suggests a locative byname, which is a byname based on the name of a place. (The suffix means 'from, of'.)

I'm not finding any likely places starting with P-vowel-r-sibilant, but if I assume the 'r' is an American addition, then you're not too far from Pozsonyi, which is pronounced roughly /PO-zho-nyee/, with /o/ like in 'go', /zh/ like the 's' in 'measure', and /ny/ like Spanish n-tilde. Pozsony is the Hungarian name of Bratislava.

Other possibilities: P枚sz枚nyi (from a village in Vas county), Pazonyi (from Ny铆rpazony, a place in Szabolcs-Szatm谩r county near Ny铆regyh谩za), Pereszl茅nyi (from a town in modern-day Slovakia), or maybe Peresznyei (from a place in Vas county).

I think you'll need to dig up some pre-immigration forms of the name to come up with anything more definite.

What is the true meaning behind the name the "White House"?

Since I was little, I've always wondered what is the meaning of the name "White House." Besides reading all the history books and internet search, no one can answer this question. Is it a subliminal message behind it? For example, "whites only" such as there being only white Presidents of the United States? Or was it just a random fix to call the President's home "White House" because it represents the first 13 states in the United States of America? Explain and support what you believe.

Where can I find out the meaning or origin of my last name for free? ?

I don't want to pay for my own information if I don't have to. Are there any sites that have an extensive last name database without asking for payment? I would like to know what my last name means and perhaps what country it originated in.

Where can I find out the meaning or origin of my last name for free? ?
I have several different routes when researching name origins.

First, I google "origin of _________" (put the last name in the blank). this usually gves me several choices, from webster's name dictionary, wikiopedia, babynames, etc.

Then I also use www.ancestry.com Now, they will let you type in a last name only for free. then the search page goes to the results, which you are only able to see part of with out paying. That's ok. Here's the secret: Look above the listings, and see where it says "switch back to old ancestry"or something like that. Click on that, and it wil take you back to the old way ancestry did searches. Here you will see the same search page, where you can't see much if you don't pay, but look to the left column and here you may see "origin of the name, ports of departure, distribution in USA, England, Germany, Scotland, etc. These things you can click on and view. They also show where you can click on message boards with people talking about that last name. I find a lot of name info that way.

You can also try www.familysearch.org and see some of the census listings for free. Here you may find where your ancestor came from.

There are a lot of on line sites that have name info, you just have to put it into the search engines as :origin of name_(last name)__ or _(name)_meaning or ___(name)__origin.

Have fun and good luck searching.
Reply:Here's the thing. If you find meaning or origin information online, especially for free, you aren't getting your own information. You are getting very general surname info that may or may not have anything to do with you. For instance, my surname is Warner. If I look online, I am told that it is a German name deriving from the given name Werner. A more detailed description tells me that it may be a contracted form of "Warrener" - some one who lives or works in a game park. I can then find lists of a few famous people with my surname or various English Warners who may or may not be related. However, because I have done quite a bit of family tree research, I actually know more information that is far more interesting and pertinent to me, such as the fact that my 11th great grandfather William Warner immigrated from Essex County, England about 1637 to Ipswich, Massachusetts Colony with his daughter Abigail and two sons, John and Daniel. Yes, I had to invest a little money and a lot of time to get from me to my ancestor, but I have something a free site on the internet can't give me.

So, long story short - surname meanings or origins are interesting, but no substitute for real research.

It's etymology is Old English, I could not place it exactly, but I think it is a variation of the old English town name Anston in Yorkshire. It's meaning would come from two English words "a" like "a" and "ston" or "stone".

What's the biblical meaning of the name Savannah?

I saw the biblical definition in a bookstore once and love it. I just named my daughter Savannah but I can't remeber what it means! I already know the meaning about the plateau.

What's the biblical meaning of the name Savannah?
The name Savannah isn't used in the bible, ergo it doensn't have a Biblica meaning. It comes from the Taino word for a grassy plain, "zabana". It's a beautiful name ... just not Biblical.

SAVANNAH

Gender: Feminine

Usage: English

Pronounced: sa-VAN-a

Means simply "savannah" from the English word for the large grassy plain, ultimately deriving from the Taino (Native American) word zabana.
Reply:As I'm certain others have pointed out, there simply isn't one. Savannah quite literally means, well, savannah! Simply referring to a large, grassy plain and ultimately taken from the Native American -- not Hebrew LOL -- word zabana.

http://www.behindthename.com/name/savann...

Any book that erroneously listed some random Biblical meaning was simply -- and clearly -- inaccurate. Certainly not worth the paper it was printed on. LOL The only actual Biblical names I can imagine you might be confusing this with would be ...

Sapphira - meaning, quite obviously, sapphire

Shiphrah - "beautiful"

Susanna(h) - commonly sited as meaning "lily," but also "rose" (in modern Hebrew) and related to the Egyptian word for "lotus." A floral name, in other words. ;)

Zibiah - "roe; deer"

Zipporah - "bird"

Hope that helps!
Reply:Where is it mentioned in the Bible??

ITYF it's purely geographical

The girl's name Savannah \s(a)-vannah, sav(an)-nah\ is pronounced sa-VAN-ah. It is of Spanish origin, and its meaning is "treeless plain". Place name: the city of Savannah, Georgia.

n 2006, the name Savannah was ranked #30

Origin: Spanish

Meaning: Treeless

Where can i find the history of and meaning of my last name?

Where can i find the history of and meaning of my last name. My last Name is Dittfurth i dont know much about the name or anything i was told its german so any info or links would be great.

Where can i find the history of and meaning of my last name?
The history of your last name is the history of your family unique to you and yours, Many books and places will claim that a names origins are such and such but until you do the research for your own family its really not going to be that accurate.Start by getting Birth certificates,Death certificates, marriage certificates, Funeral Records, Military Records, Land Grants, Wills "probates", Cemetery listings,Census Reports and then start to piece together your own family history. That should give you a good Idea of the origins of your family many germanic names can be found throughout Germany,Switzerland,Austria. For you to say that my name is from such and such b/c a book or website says so would be like winking at a girl in the dark it doesn't do ya any good. I did a search and couldn't find any meaning for the name but www. Roots.web.com had family listings for Dittfurth mostly in Texas and some in Germany.Good luck in your search.

Reply:I'd go with Welsh - but follow those links - there's got to be another one (hasn't there?).

I am going to name my son Emery Preston Miller. I feel it is a unique name with a strong meaning. WDYT?

We had thought of Ethan, but it is way too common. We are going with this old name (popular around 1880-1950). Our first son is Evan, so we thought Evan and Emery a male name meaning ruler of the home/industrious, would be cute.

*Please don't give suggestions...I have already searched for 8 months, this is the name I want. I am just asking what you all think. Thanks.

I am going to name my son Emery Preston Miller. I feel it is a unique name with a strong meaning. WDYT?
Emery Preston is a great name, a very strong sounding and interesting name for a boy.

Congrats on finding the right name!!!
Reply:I like the name..I think it sounds great. I do think you will get Evan and Emery mixed up A LOT. Even more than you would Evan and Ethan. And in addition, I have heard a lot of people using the name Emery for their daughters recently...so that might be an issue for him. But I do like the name. I don't know if that helps at all..but hopefully it gives you something to consider. Good luck!!!

P.S. According to the Social Security website, in 2007, Emery ranked 962 for male baby names, and 571 for female baby names. So that right there tells you how much more popular it is for girls than boys right now.
Reply:Emery sounds like a female. I disagree with your thought of it being strong. I'd switch back to Ethan.

Personally and being honest people won't know by his name if he is male or female and you setting him up to be made fun of in school with a name like that.

Plus Emery is a nail file, a rock band, a University, a package company recently bought by UPS, etc. not much of a male's first name.
Reply:Emery is not a very good name---your kid doesn't want to "rhyme" with his brother's name either.

He should be his own person, with his own unique name.

The only Emery I can think of is the Cliff Gorman character in BOYS IN THE BAND(1970). He was gay, and his gay friends nicknamed him "emery board" as an affectionate name.

See the movie, before you decide, please.
Reply:I only know one person with the name Emory (different spelling) and it's no one that I would choose as a namesake. That aside, it is a unique name, and he won't have any huge issues with being the 14th David Miller in your city. All in all, I think it's a good, strong choice.
Reply:Well let me tell you something on my brother behalf... His name is Scott Emery, He hates it and was teased when his friends found out it was Emery, To him it sounds feminine, They would jokingly call him Emily. You know how cruel kids can be.

I like Preston though, That's a strong name. How about Ayden, Just a thought.

Happy naming and congrats!! Boy's are great, have 4 myself.
Reply:I have only ever heard the name Emery for a girl. It sounds so much like Emily. It is very feminine. There are alot of awesome E names for boys that are original and would go great with the middle name Preston, but I won't list them, because you don't want suggestions.
Reply:When I first saw it, I thought it looked like a nice name. But then I thought of an emery board and honestly, that is all I can think of now. Preston is nice.

As long as you like it though, that is all that matters. Best of luck.
Reply:I don't really like the name Emery, but i like the middle name Preston. If your happy naming your child Emery then go for it, just my personal opinion.
Reply:Emery is alright it is for both genders

Evan and Emery , maybe you should spell it Emory though

other suggestions:

Eric

Elvin

Edmund

Earl
Reply:I agree with most of the people here. Emery sounds too feminine. If you want another name that starts with "e," then I would go with Ethan or, maybe, Elliot.
Reply:CONGRATS on everything!! Your child will be a wonderful blessing.
Reply:i like the Emery as the first name, Not big on preston reminds me of elvis, though he did have some good songs LOL
Reply:to be honest I don't think Emery sounds masculine enough for my taste for a male name
Reply:I think it is very cute and handsome and good on you for trying something different.
Reply:Good name. It is a strong name and one that a man would be proud of.
Reply:I think Emery sounds feminine. I like it but would have chose it for a girl not a boy!
Reply:It's okay. Im not too crazy about.

What is the meaning of the Indian baby boy name "ISHANT"?

I want to name my baby boy "ISHANT", but am unable to find the meaning of the name in books (checked in Maneka Gandhi's Hindu Baby Names) %26amp; the internet (most of them point to "Ishant Sharma"). Appreciate if someone can let me know the actual meaning of the name.

For starters, I know "ISHAAN" means both Lord Shiva %26amp; the North-East direction. But what does "ISHANT" mean?

What is the meaning of the Indian baby boy name "ISHANT"?
I can't find it either. I think it's just a variation on Ishaan. I'm guessing that Ishant Sharma's mother made his name up; derived from Ishaan. I did find Ishan, meaning "Guardian of the north-east" or "the Lord Sun". Usually names derived from one another have the same meaning, so I'm guessing it has the same meaning as Ishaan and Ishan.
Reply:I found Ishat which means Superior but not Ishant.

Your number is: 7

The characteristics of #7 are: Analysis, understanding, knowledge, awareness, studious, meditating.

The expression or destiny for #7:

Thought, analysis, introspection, and seclusiveness are all characteristics of the expression number 7. The hallmark of the number 7 is a good mind, and especially good at searching out and finding the truth. You are so very capable of analyzing, judging and discriminating, that very little ever escapes your observation and deep understanding. You are the type of person that can really get involved in a search for wisdom or hidden truths, often becoming an authority on whatever it is your are focusing on. This can easily be of a technical or scientific nature, or it may be religious or occult, it matters very little, you pursue knowledge with the same sort of vigor. You can make a very fine teacher, or because of a natural inclination toward the spiritual, you may become deeply emerged in religious affairs or even psychic explorations. You tend to operate on a rather different wavelength, and many of your friends may not really know you very well. The positive aspects of the 7 expression are that you can be a true perfectionist in a very positive sense of the word. You are very logical, and usually employ a quite rational approach to most things you do. You can be so rational at times that you almost seem to lack emotion, and when you are faced with an emotional situation, you may have a bit of a problem coping with it. You have excellent capabilities to study and learn really deep and difficult subjects, and to search for hidden fundamentals. At full maturity you are likely to be a very peaceful and poised individual.

If there is an over supply of the number 7 in your makeup, the negative aspects of the number may be apparent. The chief negative of 7 relates to the limited degree of trust that you may have in people. A tendency to be highly introverted can make you a bit on the self-centered side, certainly very much self-contained . Because of this, you are not very adaptable, and you may tend to be overly critical and intolerant. You really like to work alone, at your own pace and in your own way. You neither show or understand emotions very well.

Your Soul Urge number is: 6

A Soul Urge number of 6 means:

With a number 6 Soul Urge, you would like to be appreciated for your ability to handle responsibility. Your home and family are likely to be a strong focus for you, perhaps the strongest focus of your life. Friendship, love, and affection are high on your list of priorities for a happy life. You have a lot of diplomatic tendencies in your makeup, as you a able to rectify and balance situations with an innate skill. You like working with people rather than by yourself. It is extremely important for you to have harmony in your environment at all times.

The positive side of the 6 Soul Urge produces a huge capacity for responsibility; you are always there and ready to assume more than your share of the load. If you possess positive 6 Soul Urges and express them, you are known for your generosity, understanding and deep sympathetic attitude. Strong 6 energy is very giving of love, affection, and emotional support. You may have the inclination to teach or serve your community in other idealistic ways. You have natural abilities to help people. You are also likely to have artistic and creative leanings.

If you have an over-supply of 6 energy in your makeup, you may express some of the negative traits common to this number. With such a strong sympathetic attitude, it is easy to become too emotional. Sometimes the desires to render help can be over done, and it can become interfering and an attitude that is too protective, rather than helpful. The person with too much 6 energy often finds that people tend to take advantage of this very giving spirit. You may tend to repress your own needs so that you can cater to the demands from others. At times, there may be a tendency in this, for becoming over-loaded with such demands, and as a result become resentful.

Your Inner Dream number is: 1

An Inner Dream number of 1 means:

You dream of being a leader and one who is in charge. You want to be known for your courage, daring, and original ideas. You seek unconquered heights. People may get a first impression that you are very aggressive and sure of yourself.

Reply:From Derbyshire to Detroit, author Narvel S Annable reveals to Paul Hunt a fascinating life journey culminating in Lost Lad, one of the best semi-autobiographical novels to hit the gay bookstands for years, and its follow-up, Scruffy Chicken

I have to ask about your name, Narvel - where did it come from?

Apparently, my mother saw it and liked it. I have never met another Narvel but I am sure they must exist. I will have to check it out on the Internet!

Couldn't find anything other than Narvel Felts the country singer who died in 2001 and the above author.

Good luck

Name meaning?????

wats th meaning of th name anisha

Name meaning?????
ANISHA = an Indian (Hindi) girl's name meaning something like "continuous, uninterrupted, eternal"

The suggestion of some baby-name lists that Anisha is a "variant" of Anne [from Hebrew hannah, meaning "grace, favor"] or Agnes [from Greek hagnos, "pure, chaste"] is very misleading. All it means is that some people decide to use "Anisha" because the want an Indian name (or any old name!) that sort of SOUNDS like these English names. In fact, these three names have NO historical connection to each other.

(This is one of many examples of why the listings in "baby names" books need to be taken with a very large grain of salt. These works are often extremely careless compilations, assembled with little scholarly oversight.)
Reply:Variation of Agnes

Pure, chaste, innocent; a popular Roman martyr of the Middle Ages

Based on the 1990 US Census, Anisha was ranked the number 3283 most popular Girls name in the US.

The girl's name Kayla \ka(y)-la\ is pronounced KAY-la. Variant of Kay; modern variant of Katherine (Greek) "pure"; diminutive of Michaela (Hebrew) "who is like the Lord?". Another site gives keeper of the keys:

Anyone who had the keys in ancient times had authority. For example, Peter was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven, which meant he had power to make the rules.

Anyone know the meaning of the name Rosamina?

Its my sisters name, and i cant seem to find it anywhere, i want to know where it originated, and if it actually has any meaning to it.

Anyone know the meaning of the name Rosamina?
I am pretty sure it means "My Rose" or something along these lines... it's from one of the romance languages, I can tell you that much.
Reply:Hmm well I used this website:

http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com...

where apparently they have 27000 names or whatever from all around the world, and Rosamina wasn't there. However, for Rosalinda it said it's German and means weak, tender or soft horse. And for Rosalie it said it's Latin and means rose. Those are close to Rosamina but sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Here's the website if you want to check out other closely related names (but I checked and they're either German or Latin).

Hope I was helpful!

What is the meaning of the name 'Patagonia'?

Sure, it's a country- but what does the name mean?

What is the meaning of the name 'Patagonia'?
According to Antonio Pigafetta, one of the Magellan expedition's few survivors and its published chronicler, Magellan bestowed the name "Patag茫o" (or Patagoni) on the inhabitants they encountered there, and the name "Patagonia" for the region. Although Pigafetta's account does not describe how this name came about, subsequent popular interpretations gave credence to a derivation meaning 'land of the big feet'. However, this etymology is questionable.

The main interest in the region sparked by Pigafetta's account came from his reports of their meeting with the local inhabitants, who they claimed to measure some nine to twelve feet in height 鈥?quot;...so tall that we reached only to his waist"鈥? and hence the later idea that Patagonia meant "big feet". This supposed race of Patagonian giants or Patagones entered into the common European perception of this little-known and distant area, to be further fuelled by subsequent reports of other expeditions and famous-name travellers like Sir Francis Drake, which seemed to confirm these accounts. Early charts of the New World sometimes added the legend regio gigantum ("region of the giants") to the Patagonian area. By 1611 the Patagonian god Setebos (Settaboth in Pigafetta) was familiar to the hearers of The Tempest.

Reply:It is not a country. it is a region in the southern extreme of South America, that involves the southern thirds of Chile and Argentina. the name is given because of the "Patagon" indians who used to inhabit the region. It is now taken to represent vast extenses of land, virtually uninhabited, except for some very hardy farmers and some rich foreigners who like the fishing.
Reply:I dunno. I do know it aint a country but a region though.
Reply:'Land Of The Big Feet'
Reply:It's not a country..it's an area of south america covering both Argentina and Chile. Why don't you post the question on the Argentinian site??
Reply:pull out a begonia and pat it in the head and then plant it back in the garden
Reply:All the people who live there like to pat their gonads.

Does anyone else think the meaning of the name is important?

we feel convicted to give our child a name with a good literal meaning, or family meaning, or after a meaningful person. but the literal meaning seems very important to us. just wanted thoughts from others.

Does anyone else think the meaning of the name is important?
I have a stronger attachment to the aesthetics of the name, but there really are so many factors that play into it.
Reply:the meaning is less significant nowadays, but in my opinion, it is very important to know the meaning of the name. i like unusual names (especially the ones which are difficult to pronounce), but the meaning should not be ignored. it would've been interally foolish to name a boy "colleen" or being named "christina" by atheistic parents who are intending their child not to raise with a religion.

my name is kathleen dane villaluz, which means "pure danish lighthouse" and it is kindda internally foolish, but i never feel ashamed about it and i manage to serve it as a punchline. still, i think names should reflect on the parents and the baby.
Reply:Yes too me and my husband meaning of our kids its important.
Reply:Well, i don't think it's extremely important, but i wouldn't want my child's name to mean something awful.
Reply:my firstborn is Spencer, named for his grandpa. It menas "dispencer of provisions", not too exciting, but it means alot to me.

My second born is Samuel, which means "God has heard". It took us a long time to get pregnant and we had almost given up hope. In the Bible, Hannah prayed to God for a child. She promised if she had a baby she would give him to the church when he was of age, so he could seve God. The Lord heard her prayer and gave her a son, who she named Samuel. The story took on a special meaning to me during my struggle with infertility, so we chose to name our son Samuel.
Reply:Nah, I don't really care about the meaning unless it was something bad. My name is LeeAnn which means meadow full of grace. How often does someone ask you what your name means?

I'm naming my son Van and it doesnt really mean anything
Reply:Yes, I think meanings are very important. I like names that have either good literal meanings or names of good historical or literary characters. It lets the child know you put careful thought into her name, gives her something to be proud of, and gives her something to live up to. The meaning of a name isn't everything, though. I wouldn't use one that had a great meaning but an awful sound (e.g., Hephzibah).

Some favorites:

Katherine: pure

Lily: pure

Clara: bright

Alethea: truth

Lucy: light

Artemis: goddess of wisdom, chastity, and the hunt

Thalia: Greek muse of comedy

Caedmon: first English poet

Hadrian: Roman emperor

Kenneth: handsome

Frederick: peaceful ruler

Moses: the man who talked with God "face to face"

Gideon: a brave soldier
Reply:Well, if you are the kind of person that thinks about this sort of thing, then there is a good chance that your child will be like you, due to genetics and/or environmental influences.

For that reason, I would certainly look at the literal meaning of the name and the story behind it, as well as any historical or modern associations. Sooner or later the child will most likely hear the meaning of their own name and internalize it. Go for an all around good name so the child can feel proud. Meaning does matter.
Reply:I kind of agree, but right now I am trying to find something that sounds good with our last name and I'll worry about meaning later!
Reply:meaning is not that important. sound of name and how appropriate and not a wierd name are so much more important
Reply:I think it matters. I didn't really ever know what my name meant. Then we had too look up our names in 5th grade and one of the meanings for mine was bitter!!! It was embarrassing. So yes, I agree with you and your husband or wife.
Reply:I take it into consideration, but it's not the end-all for me. I wouldn't use Tessa unless she was my fourth daughter, because Tessa means 'fourth daughter'. I wouldn't use Thomas unless he was a twin, because it means 'twin'.

On the other hand, I don't expect Daphne to be a bay laurel tree, or James to rise up and supplant my fiance.
Reply:i go more for family names and names that i like how they sound. don't care about the meanings. the child will have their own personality, and by so doing, bring their own meaning to the name.
Reply:I do think that the meaning of the name is nice to know but I don't think that is going to be how the person is. The name Leah means weary. I know a Leah who is not weary at all.
