Why do people think it's a good idea to name their kid something just because the name has meaning to them?

I mean, I am a night person, should I name my baby Luna, knowing she would be called lunatic? What about Venus? I think it's a nice name and it would mean something to me if I was a fan of Venus Williams- but it also rhymes with penis. I wish people would start using common sense and stop being so selfish when it comes to baby naming. It's getting ridiculous. Anyone else agree that it is mean to do this to kids?

People think that's a good idea because they believe that their children are their private property.

If only parents thought of their children as miniature adults who only need care and guidance, then there would be a lot less stupid names out there.
Reply:I think it is a good idea because you don't want to just look through a list of names and pick one that sounds cool. It's an important decision and it SHOULD mean something to you. I am a strong woman and I hope that my daughters will be the same way. I have picked two names from a book and a movie because that character was a strong, courageous woman and I love what the name represented. I chose Ayla from the book "Clan of the Cave Bear" and Evolet from the movie "10,000 B.C." I loved what the characters stood for and I want to name my daughters after them so they know what kind of woman they can be. You think that's wrong? I'm sorry, but I don't. Some names are ridiculous, but if it means something to the parents, then you have no right to judge.
Reply:Of course it makes sense. I'd never name my kids something so apt to foolish derision. One of my friends have a family member named Rucker. I just don't understand.

Don't misunderstand me. I love names with meanings behind them. And children will make fun of anything. But I wouldn't hand them the key to make my child's life miserable.
Reply:I think it's nice for a name to have good meaning. I like Biblical/Hebrew names because they sound nice and they have meaning. But I also agree that it has gone too far. Many of the names I see on here are ridiculous.
Reply:lmao somewhat agree
