Anyone out there know the meaning of the exceptionally rare name "Contrelia?"?

I've seen instances of this name used either as a 1st name or as a last (family) name but was unable to contact the individuals in every case. I'm aware of one instance of this name used in a Spanish magazine (Glamour) users group 2 -3 years ago but was unsuccessful in contacting the member. This is the name of a friend who in many years has been unable to learn the meaning of this name. I've put much effort into researching this over the past year or so but have so far been unsuccessful. Any help anyone can provide on this question will be very much appreciated!

I think it means "lovely hopping dove".
Reply:Not every name HAS a meaning!!! You may be unsuccessful, because you are working on a false assumption. (and one that we see here almost every day).

Names are labels... nothing more. I have several examples in my own research.. one is where Fillingham evolved into Fullingim. ONLY because it was difficult to say or spell, and it wound up being accepted as the misspelling. To take it another step.. if the person using Fullingim had 1 son and 5 daughters, AND the son died in a war with no children... the name could conceivably disappear.

Surnames are a part of family history, but FAR less important or reliable than people realize... until they start doing research into the individual persons. Your own grandfather may have used the name John Smythe, and you use Smith. It does not change what your biological relationship is.

The irony is that if your friend sits down to actually trace his ancestors, in the process, he will likely see where THEY come from, and very probably, find the specific place where the name evolved. Understanding the difference between tracing a surname.. or tracing a family.. may put a stop to you banging your head on a virtual brick wall.
