Where did the name and meaning for coffee cake come about?

since there is no coffee in it....

Where did the name and meaning for coffee cake come about?
They are called coffee cakes, because they pair well with Coffee

Here's more about coffee cakes...

"Food historians generally agree the concept of coffee cake [eating sweet cakes with coffee] most likely originated in Northern/Central Europe sometime in the 17th century. Why this place and time? These countries were already known for their traditional for sweet yeast breads. When coffee was introduced to Europe these cakes were a natural accompaniment. German, Dutch, and Scandinavian immigrants brought their coffee cake recipes with them to America.

The first coffee cake-type foods were more like bread than cake. They were simple concoctions of yeast, flour, eggs, sugar, nuts, dried fruit and sweet spices. Over time, coffee cake recipes changed. Sugared fruit, cheese, yogurt and other creamy fillings are often used in today's American coffee cake recipes."
Reply:You're welcome =) ty for picking my answer =) Report Abuse

Reply:It's a cake served with coffee or eaten at breakfast. It's not named for an ingredient...it's named coffee cake because people usually drink coffee when they're eating it.

Many foods are named for things other than their ingredients. Hamburgers weren't named that because they contain ham, which they don't. They named for the city where they originated. Hamburg Germany. And, candy canes don't contain canes. They're named "cane" for their shape.
Reply:it's quick and easy to make you do not have to frost it it is better warm and goes good with coffee
Reply:It's cake that goes well with coffee, therefore it is called coffee cake.

Which name is best and does meaning really matter?

My husband and I are expecting our second son in a few days. We are still undecided on a name.

Ryan (little king) Scott

OR

Cameron (crooked nose) Scott

We like both but are having a hard time deciding between the two. Does the meaning of the name really matter or should it depend on what we like best?

Which name is best and does meaning really matter?
I like Ryan Scott best. It just sounds good together.

but Cameron Scott sounds fine too. The meaning of the name doesn't matter and i think crooked nose sounds cute. So go with whatever name you like as if the meanings weren't there.
Reply:Name meanings do matter. I have a friend named Naomi (pleasant) and she is very pleasant to be around. And it doesn't even have to match up to the actual meaning of the name my friend Danielle (God is my Judge) while she is a Christian and God is her judge the story of Daniel in the lion's den matches her personality better as I like to say "The lions don't mess with her". So also think about the people you know who are named Ryan Scott or Cameron Scott; which person do you want your kid to act more like?

Also think do you want "little king scotsman" or "crooked nose scotsman"? (Scott means either scotsman or tattoo)

My vote is for Ryan Scott because I think Cameron is more of a girl's name. But since you both seem to like the name Scott why don't you make that name his first name and then pick another name to be the middle name or you could just do what my cousins did, they picked out a couple of names and then waited until their daughter was born and then decided what name she looked the most like. So you could wait and see if he looks more like a Ryan or Cameron before deciding.
Reply:I think it should depend on what you like best and not necessarily the meaning. Most people won't even know what the meaning of a name is unless you tell them. I like both your names, though actually I like them for girls. I have two co-workers named Ryan (one male, one female) and there are two little girls in my kids' preschool named Cameron, but also a boy Cameron in my neighborhood. So I think both names are pretty unisex.

Of the two, I like Cameron better. It just gives me the impression of a cute little boy and as an older child, someone smart. Ryan is okay but not as good - but that's just my opinion. Either will be great! Good Luck!
Reply:Personally, I love the name Ryan. It's my cousin's name, haha.

But it's really great, for both a little baby and an adult!

The meaning is a big plus as well.

Cameron isn't bad, but it's really common, and well sort of feminine in my opinion. The meaning makes it worse in my opinion.

I don't think the meaning makes THAT big of a difference. It's not like someone is going to go up to a guy named Camerson and say "OMG you're name means crooked nose!!!"

Don't worry, just pick the name you love.

Maybe wait until you see your son, and pick the name that fits him best?

Or ask the older brother/sister to be which name they like best?

Congrats!
Reply:I wouldn't really look at meanings unless you wanted to name your child "hope, or loved" then maybe look at names that have those meanings. But, it's interesting to see when you name your child once you see them and look at the meaning later. I got the privilage to name my brother - I chose the name 'Aiden' this was 6 years ago. Now, looking at the meaning "little fire" totally resembles his persaonlity, and his strawberry blonde haircolour.
Reply:I think the meaning is just a bit of fun. I suppose your son would like it better if he had a cool meaning to his name. On the other hand i know a guy called Cameron and he likes his name so it's really up to you. I like Cameron Scott personally because it has more syllables and sort of rolls of the toung.
Reply:Meaning is not the most important thing in my opinion becauseI don't think people will be like the "Nice to meet you Cameron. Are you aware that your name means "crooked nose"?" :D Because not everyone is going to know the meaning. That said, I much prefer Ryan anyway. And it doesn't hurt that it has a good meaning. :D
Reply:For some people the meaning really matters. If it doesn't really matter to you then it just doesn't. Personally I like Ryan better than Cameron, but that's because Cameron is becoming very feminine these days. Ryan will always be masculine to me.

Good luck and congratulations!
Reply:I like Ryan Scott together better but I have a soft spot for Cameron its my sons name, but very overused now a days. Meanging dont mean anything after you pick out the name if that makes sense. When there 13 will you be screamig Cameron Scott get in here or hey crocked nose, lol!
Reply:I don't think the meaning means a thing unless you want it to. Go with what you like best and want to call you son for his whole life :)

If I went my meaning, Marie means "bitter"... but it's a family name that will be passed down if our next is a girl.
Reply:well my names meaning is very important to me. If it ment crooked nose I would have been upset. So if it's between the two I'd pick Ryan. It's a cute name anyway.
Reply:Yes and no, I would never use Cameron or Kennedy because of their meanings, Kennedy means deformed head!!!

So definitally Ryan Scott, it is an amazingg name %26lt;3
Reply:I think it really comes down to what you like best. I think they are both nice names. I really like Cameron Scott a little more than Ryan Scott.

--My husband's name is Cameron. :)

Good luck!
Reply:I love both names

I like Ryan a bit more than Cameron

Ryan Cameron or Cameron Ryan works
Reply:Ryan

meaning does not matter at all, unlesss you are super religious and want your kid to be like a saint or something.......
Reply:It should depend on what you like best, not the meaning. I can see why you are having a hard time deciding between the two! They are both very nice names, but I think Ryan Scott sounds better.
Reply:Yes the meaning should matter. I like Cameron because it flows better, but I like Ryan b/c i've always loved tht name more.
Reply:The meaning does NOT matter, so pick which name you all like best.

One of my favorite girls names is Kennedy and it means ugly head!

But it's such a cute name so who cares. (:
Reply:Meaning never meant anything to me because no one asks/cares unless one is very religious! I love Cameron.
Reply:i think it should depend on the way you liike it because not many people will know the meaning of the names unless you tell them.

I like Ryan Scott
Reply:I'd go w/ ryan cameron scott @ this late date! It's a great combo, and no more choices to make! Good Luck!
Reply:It should depend on what you like the best.Personally I like ryan scott because that'ss my cousins name.

Good luck!
Reply:Ryan is best and meaning doesn't matter.
Reply:Meaning doesn't matter much to me, but I still like Ryan Scott better.
Reply:Ryan
Reply:I have always loved the name Ryan Scott! Wanted to name my boy that but someone else used the name :(

Possibly derived from a Welsh root meaning "beautiful". In Celtic legend she was an Irish princess betrothed to King Mark of Cornwall. She became the lover of his knight Tristan, which led to their tragic deaths.

Interesting point. In all past societies into antiquity names really did mean something. The part I didn't get is how could you affix a description of characteristics and life directions in a being only a few hours old?

That would have to come from mystical sources and you'd really want to be careful around that kind of stuff. Yanno?

Puerto Rico name meaning what was in the island consider rich port?

The island was once known to have lots of gold and it's very rich in it's natural resources.

Puerto Rico name meaning what was in the island consider rich port?
Puerto Rico was first named San Juan after John the Baptist. Due to the natural beauty, the tropical island that it is, and because of the water, flora and fauna, it was then given the name of Puerto Rico. Which is Rich Port, also because many ship did and still dock here. It is like a pit stop to all ships going North or South bound from and to the States. There was gold here but it was just a small amount hundreds of years ago. If there still is gold, it would be hard to find which the Spanish were looking for when they saw the taino indian chief or Cacique with a cord around his neck with a small gold medallion. Also, chalk was taken out of the mountains near the center of the island and it was exported. It is found in Aguas Buenas in the Sierra la Tiza. Which is where men would did out the chalk and mules were used to carry it from the mountain down to the towns for sale. But basicaly, Puerto Rico stands for the beauty that exists as a tropical Island.
Reply:The Taino indians made the mistake of showing Columbus the gold nuggets that were plentiful in their rivers.
Reply:To the Spaniards it was a rich port full of new things to explore...
Reply:Christopher Columbus named the island that we know today as Puerto Rico with the name "San Juan Bautista", or Saint John the Baptist. 16 years later, Juan Ponce de Le贸n and his crew founded the city of Puerto Rico ("Rich Port", indeed) in a natural harbor in the northern part of the island. The names were later switched (no one really knows how), and the island took the name of the city and vice versa.

What is the meaning of my last name?

Shamberger? Apparently my paternal family goes as far back as the late 1700s in the U.S., but they Americanized the name. I would like to know what it means and who I am related to in Germany.

What is the meaning of my last name?
Adding on to the above, -er also indicates the area the family comes from. Ich bin Berliner means I am from Berlin. It could mean the family came from Schaumberg.

Berg also means mountain. It is possible the berg is a corruption of -burg, which means walled city, such as Bittburg or Ludwigsburg.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Well I am a Shamberger as well and Im black though, not sure if you are too but i have heard every joke in the book. My grandfather is from north carolina though. Report Abuse

Reply:Due to the bad spelling, it is hard to tell.

It sounds to me as if the name should be "Schaumberger". That is a common German name.

"Schaum" means "foam" or "bubbles". The "berger" is a Germanic construction "er" means "doer" -- the verb would be "bergen", i.e. to rescue, save, protect, etc. Therefore, the closest one can come today would be "Foamsaver". Sorry, that is the best I can do.

However, interestingly enough, the German word "Meerschaum" means a kind of rock with a foamy appearance. I believe the same word is used in English. Perhaps "Schaumberger" was somebody who had something to do with this rock? It was/is used to make tobacco pipes.

Can anyone explain to me the meaning behind the name Michael?

I checked the meaning on wikipedia and others sites and it says it means "who is like god?" Can anyone elaborate. What does this phrase really mean and what is with the question mark?

Can anyone explain to me the meaning behind the name Michael?
I don't know why is has a question mark but I would say that is means one who resembles God. The origin is hebrew and the biblical context is that Michael is the archangel who leads the army of heaven. His fight and victory against Satan is described in the Book of Revelation. Hope I helped
Reply:From the Hebrew name מִיכָאֵל (Mikha'el) which meant "who is like God?". This is the name of one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers.

This was the name of nine Byzantine emperors and a czar of Russia. Other more modern bearers of this name include the 19th-century chemist/physicist Michael Faraday and basketball player Michael Jordan.
Reply:Well in the bible Michael is another name for Jesus, and Jesus is God's son and God made Jesus in his image ... there for the defenition for Michael would be 'like god'
Reply:hmm thats a good question...good thing i dont like this name...popularity reasons...i was in one class in jr high with a Michael W, Michael G, and Michael A. none of them went by mike or mikey or mickey or anything else. it was tough

What is the meaning of the name Hara Gopal?

I would like to find the significance of the name Hara Gopal. So please do let me know if you have one.

What is the meaning of the name Hara Gopal?
THERE was a goldsmith who kept a jewellery shop. He looked like a great devotee with beads round his neck, rosary in his hand, and customary holy marks on his forehead. Naturally people trusted him and came to his shop on business. They thought that, being such a pious man, he would never cheat them. Whenever a party of customers entered the shop, they would hear one of his craftsmen say, "Kesava! Kesava!'

Another would say after a while, "Gopal! Gopal!'

Then a third would mutter, "Hari! Hari!'

Finally someone would say, "Hara! Hara!'

Now these are different names of God. Hearing so much chanting of God's names the customers naturally thought that this goldsmith must be a very superior person.

What is the etymology, i.e., the origin and meaning, of the name "Idalid"?

It is spelled correctly. Though it is possible it is "made up," I have seen more than one occurence of the name leading me to believe it is a rarely used name with both meaning and origin.

What is the etymology, i.e., the origin and meaning, of the name "Idalid"?

"My father told me that it means lord and master, it's of Arabic origin"

I have to say, though, that it doesn't look like an Arabic word or name.

Can anyone tell me the meaning of the name Rinoa?

I want to call my child this, because I love the name, but I wondered what it actually meant?!

Can anyone tell me the meaning of the name Rinoa?
I found this on a search.....Rinoa is the name of a character from a video game, Final Fantasy VIII. The game was originally Japanese. Though there isn't 100% confirmation, experts on video games seem to believe that the Japanese creator of the game actually named the character with the French name "Lenore" in mind. The closest he could get to "Lenore" in Japanese was to use characters that are pronounced as "Rinoa". When the game was brought to the United States, the manufacturer used the sound of the characters in Japanese for the English name of the character rather than reverting to the original Lenore.
Reply:I believe it is a derivative of Lenore created for the final fantasy game (which is still an ok name, wendy was a derivative of Gwenevere for Peter Pan) Lenore comes from Eleanore, which means "the other Aenor" (Aenor being an old french name)

Can any one tell me if this name has a meaning?
The name Naeem means benevolent and is of north african descent. Good Luck
Reply:It's an Masculine Arabic name meaning "Contented".

Contented meaning; the past-tense of Content; satisfied or showing satisfaction with things as they are.

What is the meaning of the baby name Kayla?

I want to name my baby kayla but everytime i look up the meaning it says something different so what are all the meanings and what site did you find it on. Crown of laurels I found the most but what does that mean?? thanks

What is the meaning of the baby name Kayla?
I say if you like the name, use it anyway. Most people don't even care about the meaning, unless it's something not very desirable. Crown of laurels almost sounds like a crown of some type of flower or something. Kayla is a very pretty name.

Pronounced: KAY-la

Kayla

This girl's name is used in English. Its source is Caoilinn, an Irish Gaelic name meaning "Slim and fair." However, not all experts agree. Learn about the disputed meaning.

Alternate spellings of the name Kayla include: Caela, Caihla, Caila, Cayla, Kaala, Kaelah, and six other alternate spellings. There are 10 other forms of Kayla. There are also teasing nicknames (see Drawbacks).

The name Kayla ranked 17th in popularity for females of all ages in a sample of 2000-2003 Social Security Administration statistics and 338th in popularity for females of all ages in a sample of the 1990 US Census.

Commentary on the meaning dispute (from the same website above): Some authorities associate this name with the Yiddish name Kelila, meaning ''crown of laurel.'' Others believe it is a short form of Michaela.

KAYLA. Kayla is the archetypal dark horse name that galloped from nowhere 鈥?it isn't even mentioned in one of the most authoritative name dictionaries, published in 1983 鈥?to assume a place among the Top 10 names for girls today. How does a name get so popular so fast? In Kayla's case, a starring role on the soap opera Days of Our Lives starting in 1982 gave it widespread attention among a largely female audience, who were attracted to the gentle quality of the Kayla character. By the late '80s, thousands of parents were flocking to the name because it seemed to be fresh, unusual, and distinctive 鈥?which it was, for about two minutes. At this point Kayla is, obviously, a must to avoid for any parent who wants to make a truly individual choice. But if, on the other hand, it's a name that you love so much you simply must have it, rest assured that children like having popular names and that Kayla, despite its widespread use, still has a creative and charming flavor. KAILA is also a Yiddish name.

It is also of Hebrew origin. It means laurels.

This is what laurels is: In Greek and Roman times, laurel leaves were woven into a crown and given to outstanding citizens who performed a heroic action. Laurel leaves, also known as bay leaves, are infamous for their bitter, spicy taste found in many food dishes. Not only are bay leaves used for culinary purposes, but they also have medicinal and cosmetic value. The leaves of a laurel grow on trees or large bushes.

Can the meaning of a name influence the personality of its owner?

I've met quite a few people whose names "fit" them. There appeared to be a "chemistry" between the name and the person's character.

Can the meaning of a name influence the personality of its owner?
it's funny that you brought up that question because my sister made a similar comment a few days ago. i think that some people really do go hand in hand with their name. there are some who don't match the name they have at all. my ex had a really dorky name. when i first met him, and found out his name, i giggled cause he was so cute but his name was not!
Reply:My first revision didn't take for some reason. So I will try it again:

Many good answers! Thank you sharing!

I've known some people who were given names associated with royalty or integrity who were SO the opposite. There must have been a breakdown in nurture. Report Abuse

Reply:i agree with you!! Report Abuse

Reply:I've felt that way too. It seems like that a lot. Like the name Cassie.. spelled differently, but I know several people with that name and they are all odd and gay, lol.

And I've met other people.. with my name.. that look like me and acted like me when I was younger.
Reply:Sometime is seems that way, but then you'll meet someone who doesn't, like this really hot babe I met named Mildred.
Reply:The name obviously influences the behavior of its owner rather than vice versa. Names confer expectations that they will be lived up to, or conformed to.

Boys with masculine names are generally more macho acting than the boy named Sue or Beverly (with notable exceptions, of course).
Reply:I think it has a small effect on the subconscious.
Reply:No. There was this man who tried this experiment, to see whether a name would influence a child's future. He had two sons. One was named Winner and the other was named Loser. He doted on Winner and gave him everything. Loser was neglected as a child. Guess who grew up to be a criminal and who grew up to be a respected sheriff? Winner went to jail. Loser is known affectionately as Inspector Lou. This is a true story, and it happened in US.
Reply:i dont think so. my name is alyssa. but i tell people to call me ally because its more spunky and attitude filled than my actual name, and fits me better. but other people think that ally is cute, instead of edgy. but its also the way i spell it. people think that im friendly coz i spell it like 'ally' but in truth, im an in-your-face jerk. i think that because ive met so many people that think my name is pretty, that ive actually rebelled and said to myself that i was going to be the exact opposite of what they expect. so maybe it does have something to do with a personality.
Reply:I have to disagree with that theory. Anyone once they are over 18, can change their name.
Reply:Yes.

Sienna "reddish orange-brown"

Scarletta "scarlet"

Admina "of the red earth"

Meredith (has red in it)
Reply:It is so common now for people to invent names that you should feel free to take even a two syllable word for read and make up your own version.

Example: Crimsona (accent on first and last syllables, please)

Or go Carmina - from the Latin for scarlet with nice flower connotations as well as an opera. Nice added benefit is lots of variant spellings to choose from: Carminah Carmine Carmynah, Karmina Karminah, Karmyna Karmynah

The word Shehad is use in the term, " to war " " to bring war " " to go into war ". That is why you have heard it used so much when listening to the news about Iraq.
Reply:Shehad is an Iraqi name. It is either a woman's name or a man's. An article appeared discussing a woman named Shehad:

"Shehad Hassan fled Baghdad with her family after they received a death threat. They thought Fallujah, a traditionally Sunni city, would welcome Sunni refugees fleeing Shiite threats, but the city, which has seen more fighting than most, has barely been tolerant. She has left the shelter in a concrete mosque only twice in two years."

There is also a man named Shehad who was considered a terrorist:

Julien

French: from the personal name, French form of Julian.

English: variant spelling of Julian.

hope this helps.
Reply:julien is the name of some of my relatives. The origin is French.
Reply:Both Julien and Julian are similar to Julius, Jules, Julio, Jule, Juli, Juley and Julee. Some of which are variants of Julius which is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "Jove's child".

Julius, a Roman centurion, saved Paul's life during a hazardous voyage.

What language is it in? If someone were to read it in my language which is Arabic and in my dialect it would mean that Mohsen, which is a guys name in Arabic and zadeh would mean to make something larger in quantity or to do something more often, summit like that.
Reply:Try spelling it phoenetically in different ways and running it (and it's roots) through translation programs. Off the top of my head (WAG here) I would start by seeing if you have Hebrew roots in your name. Then try Arabic and other semitic languages. Just for an example of different ways the spelling could have changed: Motzen Tzadi, Moysinsada, Mose entsada, etc.
Reply:It's a Persian name. I would suggest contacting an Iranian cultural center and finding someone fluent in Farsi to help you find its meaning.

Would the meaning of the name put you off of naming your baby?

For example, I really liked the name Mallory. It's a pretty name but it means unlucky.

Would the meaning of the name put you off of naming your baby?
"The meaning of baby names can be a major reason for parents to select a specific name for their baby. It is often a belief that the meaning of a name can instill certain characteristics or attributes that is the deciding factor in a baby鈥檚 name..."

Mallory is a calm and soothing name. You evidently found the French meaning of the name. However, the German meaning of the name means "army counselor". That is a name that speaks of wisdom and strength.

"Army" implies strength and power, which can be a good thing for a girl in this day and age.

"Counselor" implies wisdom and intelligence. What more could you ask for your daughter?

Naming a child is a big responsibility and not something to be taken lightly. We've all known kids in school who were teased for their name or even the meaning of their initials.

But when it comes down to it, you have to name your child something that you like. After all, it's pretty much guaranteed you will be whispering, singing, crying and yelling that name quite a bit over the next 18 years. So it better be something that you can say easily and like the sound of when you say it.

Congratulations and don't let others tell you they don't like the name. So what? Remember, you, your baby and what you want to impart or speak into you baby's future is really what matters. Not the opinions of strangers. Not even mine.
Reply:Yes my whole life I have loved the name Caleb. I have read that it means anger like a dog and on other sites it say forceful like a dog. My husband just can't get past the meaning and refuses to name our child Caleb. :( such a pretty name such a bad meaning.

Maybe you could go with Mallie or something close but not quite the same?

i remember having to do a report in school where we had to find the meanings of our first, middle, and last name and its origin and I was proud that my name meant "beloved" It would have been weird but not devastating to have said "unlucky".

Oh and my mother's real name is Dolores and it means "sorrow" my mom hated the meaning so much she changed it to her middle name "kay" in the third grade.
Reply:No not really but if it was a really horrible meaning like ugly or stupid I wouldn't use it. I like the name Marie and the meaning is bitter, it's pretty harsh but I still might use it as a middle name for my daughter. I like Scarlett Marie, Lillian Marie, Layla Marie or Ava Marie x
Reply:If I liked the name, I would do it. My parents loved the name Chelsea and named my sister it without knowing it meant "Port of Ships." My name means "Olive Tree." It's not the name will make her unlucky.
Reply:Mallory sounds like a mallard duck. Or someone with frizzy hair. Oh my, that is unlucky! I guess I don't have much room to talk, though. I'm planning on Carter if I have a boy, which means something like driver of a cart.

Well, you guys have an idea wats the meaning of the name Theresa?

Meaning of names!

Well, you guys have an idea wats the meaning of the name Theresa?
From the Spanish and Portuguese name Teresa. The meaning is uncertain, but it could be derived from Greek theros "summer", from Greek therizein "to harvest", or from the name of the Greek island of Thera (the main island of Santorini). A famous bearer was Maria Theresa, an Austrian Habsburg queen of the 18th century. She inherited the domains of her father, Charles VI, the Holy Roman Emperor, which began the War of the Austrian Succession.
Reply:It's originated from the greek island Therasia and it means "late summer" :)

What is the meaning of the name Rogue?

I am having alittle girl and would love to name her Rogue what is the meaning of this name for a baby girl? I know what it means in the dictionary but just wondered if it was the same for a name. And please i dont want to hear if you dont like it, its not your baby to name, its mine. Thanks heaps guys :)

What is the meaning of the name Rogue?
The meaning of Rogue is the same as the word.

Rogue: a deceitful and unreliable scoundrel; a person that is purposely deceptive; an idle, unreliable and treacherous person

And to the girl that said it is French for the color red, that's untrue. ROUGE IS THE FRENCH WORD FOR RED. Pronounced roo-j but with a softer "j" sound.
Reply:its just french for the color red, the meaning doesn't change as a name. I think its a cute name.
Reply:Well since everyone went against your wishes and told you they hate it, how about something similar that wont get so much hate mail...like Rogan or Regan? You could even spell it "Roguen" or Roguien" although watch out for the Rogaine jokes. Those are more fem. Rogan is prettier than Logan...and you get to keep the Rog- sound. The French word for Red is NOT Rogue. It is spelled differently and pronounced Rooj like the other answerer said.

Look at Demi Moore and how she named her little girl "Scout"..did anyone get used to that one? Good luck!
Reply:Prepare to have your child made fun of throughout her life.

Hint: Incoming X-men jokes.
Reply:it means Red in french!! and to tell you the truth it is a gorgus name when i have kids thats one of the names i might have in mind now thank you wen i was little i wanted to call him Dill Pickles and i thought it was a awsome name but my mom said he was Joshph shaden Dale Zielke and was to be called Shaden. it al up to the people that are under the name Rogue is red red is bright your doughter will have a bright beautiful personality
Reply:What a horrible thing to name your daughter. It's masculine and not at all feminine. Not to mention it's not even a legitimate name. And I suppose if it was, it would be a boy's name, not a girl's.

Might I add that Robert Rodriguez named his children Rocket (son), Racer (son), Rebel (son), Rogue (son), Rhiannon (daughter).
Reply:It's not a name, it's a random word. It has only been used as a name by idiot parents that think it's clever and unique to name their children ridiculous words like Rogue, Scoundrel and Riot. It's meaning in the dictionary is the only meaning of rogue
Reply:you're a fan of "X-Men," aren't you?

ok, so you wanna name you babe a scoundrel a dishonest person?? is that it? please i really would like to know? why?
Reply:i've like this name ever since x-men came out, its different and unique and very pretty. i'm not sure what it means but i love it.

What does the meaning of my name mean?

My name is Brandon and it means hill covered in broom (type of weed) and im not sure what thats supposed to mean. anyone have any ideas?

What does the meaning of my name mean?
It is not at all uncommon for personal names to be taken from geographical names.

Many surnames (last names) were established based on where a person lived. In Scotland, for example, John of Ross became simply John Ross over time.

Perhaps a long time ago a lady gave her maiden name to her son for a first name or perhaps someone heard the name (or word) and really liked the way it sounded.

It's a very nice name - very manly - no matter what it is supposed to mean.

How much effect has your first name ( the name meaning )had on your life ?

my first name wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so close to my sisters first name. mine is Lynn and hers is Zellynn , our family aunts uncles cousins etc. hate her first name so the insisted on calling us both Lynn and to make it worse she was big Lynn and i was baby Lynn or lynnsue they would add my middle name and blend it like it was one word. friends would tease me when they heard it ....... so moms and dads and moms and dads to be...... give your children names that aren't like they're older siblings, and give names that they can live with.

I found two meanings for my name 'victory' and 'versatile in inspirations' and they both fit my life and personality to a T.
Reply:nothing at all my name amy but wish it was just different
Reply:My name is Mary which apparently means "sea of bitterness," and it is very true to my character. It's not that I'm a hothead, but I am somewhat pessimistic and things that don't make other people angry (like poverty, injustice) make me as angry as if it had happened to me.
Reply:In my country, it's very important to name the babies. So all of the parents want to get the best name for their child. The meanings of those names often are : rich, lucky, decent, delicate... But some of the names are nonsense. Anyway, my (real)name means Snow. And I have got a porcelain skin (!) ;)
Reply:special and it was meant for a reason
Reply:Suprisingly alot...I have a popular 80's name and apparently half of the pregnant population in '86 named their daughter's the same as my mother. People have an image of what an "Ashley" should look like and I get "You don't LOOK like an Ashley." all the time...Can't tell if that's good or bad but it gets irritating either way.

its not a nice first name there was a song the kids used to sing to make fun of me

but i never really let it bother me
Reply:My name was chosen because of its meaning. My name is Desiree and it means "desired". My mother tried to have a child for years and had nearly given up hope after years of trying and several early miscarriages. When she became pregnant with me, she was thrilled, but very scared that she might have another miscarriage. She went to hospital very often because of early labour and the doctors were afraid that this could be a sign that the baby was disabled. My mother had to keep bed rest for several months to avoid a preterm birth.

My parents had spoken of names a lot, but hadn't decided for a name before I was born. My mother told me that when the doctor handed me to her and told her "you have a healthy girl" she knew for sure that my name had to be Desiree.

I think the name had a huge effect on my live. No matter what happened later in my life or how hard the times were, I had the knowledge that my birth was a dream come true for my family. I have had hard times in my life and there were times when everything seemed to go wrong. But I never considered my life not worth living. I kind of thought that I owed it to my mother to never loose hope that I could reach my goals and live a happy life, because she fought so hard to give me this life.
Reply:to be honest, it hasnt really affected me much, but my name is spelled Eva and pronounced Ay-va (long story and reason behind it) so everyone misspronounces and that gets annoying, plus everyone says i look like an Eva and they cant see me with a different name.

Korean name translation with name meaning?

My name's Jody and my Japanese name's translation is Sanshu, which means "Praise God" in Kanji. I was wondering if through my Japanese name I could have a Korean name, or anything related to that phrase as a Korean name. Please explain the meaning too. A friend has given me the name "jung hee" which kind of means justice, but I'm looking for something that would really match my name. Thanks!

Korean name translation with name meaning?
Praise in Korea is 칭찬 (chingchan) but i am not sure if Koreans give names this way. I think they are not like Chinese whose every name has meaning. In fact your name can be written in Korean 조디.
Reply:Most Korean names DO have a meaning, precisely because they have Chinese characters attached to them.

This is going to be a bit confusing to explain. Besides the Korean hangul writing system, Koreans also use hanja, which are pretty much Chinese characters (unlike many Japanese kanji, which the Japanese gov't gave kunyomi, or Japanese meanings). The Korean language used to use a lot of hanja, but now it probably numbers only about a thousand, and the Korean gov't is still actively phasing it out of the language.

In any case, one certain Korean character can correspond to many different Chinese radicals, thus allowing variety of meaning and personalization for people with the same name. The Korean gov't maintains a list of Chinese characters that are allowable for use in names. Usually one's grandfather (or head of household) will choose the hanja, or the family will pay someone who specializes in this to choose it. Thus I do not have this list, and my knowledge of hanja is like... 10 characters.

Anyways, most likely you CAN find hanja through the kanji of your onamae. It would help if you showed us the kanji, actually, because there's probably more than one hanja combination for "Praise God".

On what website can I find the meaning of my last name?

Thanks.

I tried to search on google but it gives me people with my same last name instead of the meaning of my last name.

On what website can I find the meaning of my last name?
This works sometimes:

If you know the nationality of your name, say, if it's Italian, go to:

http://dictionary.reference.com/translat...

then type in your name, translate into english, and you will know. Many times the last name is derived from ordinary words in other languages...good luck.

If that doens't work, try meeting and chatting with people with the same surname/last name to see if they know (older people are smarter on this), or just ask people that know the language of your last name and ask them...
Reply:The origin of a surname is not important in genealogy as the same surname can come from more than one nationalilty and not everyone with the same surname is related.

Have you ever looked up the meaning of your last name and found something interesting?

I found out that mine is meant to do with a town or house which is built/put on an elevation.

And my first name Sarah means Lady or Princess etc and my middle name means The Garden so that makes me...

The Lady/Princess of a garden and house/town which is built/made on a hill.

Lol, found that hilarious and this is the site I used: http://www.searchforancestors.com/

Have you ever looked up the meaning of your last name and found something interesting?
Well, my last name, ''Post'' should be pretty obvious. As for Melchior, one of the three wise men and all. (Biblical story of Jesus' birth)

Post is actually a German name. My family must've come from there a long time ago.

It can mean ''mail'', but was also used for people who lived near a certain landmark or boundary. It's also used in Dutch and Danish.
Reply:I know what my first name means but no I've never looked up my last name.
Reply:I highlighted your question by giving it a star. Too often we people hold onto prejudice because it protects us and helps give us a sense, a good sense, of who we are. Our prejudice, often too, makes us feel important. This is something that we need, living in a competitive world.

I hope that most of the top genealogist registered for this forum will give your question a second glance and perhaps comment on your question and/or my answer. Often times, we feel that everything is known and that there is no new knowledge left to uncover. Life and scholarship becomes somewhat stagnant. So, I thought that I would contribute to the pool of knowledge here in the genealogy section. I hope that people don't mind.

Yours,

Zhou and Guo

1. My last name is a Hebrew last name. My family comes from an ancient village in Shinar, also, known as Mesopotamia. The name of this village is Hassuna, a very old settlement about 25 miles south of Calah.

2. If any of you are decent Christian scholars or students of the Bible, you might be familiar with the story of Nimrod. After the flood of Noah arose a mighty hunter, who opposed God. He took his tribal bands up the Tigres River and conscripted people there and built great cities. During that time, the Hebrew race lived in cities like Sephar and Ninevah. This is the Northern part of Iraq and part of what is called, today, the Sunni Triangle.

3. My Hebrew last name of Jo is the shortened or abbreviated form of God's name, Jehovah. We got that last name about four thousand years ago sometime just after the time of Eber and long before Abram.

4. Originally our last name of Joba meant "God to hold" in its original form. Through the ages names and word meanings change. So much of our human past has been lost with time. If you come from a major world civilization, you might, though, find enough records to give you clues as to an ancient past and uncover many things, good things, which will make life and our greater world a much better and more wonderful place in which to live.

5. As my family migrated from Shinar into China, 1900 BC to 1700 BC, our name changed to Jo. In China, it is pronounced as Djou. In the Wades-Giles romanization system, it was romanized as Chou. Zhou in Mandarin, and Chow upon our arrival to America.

6. In China, our family surname means "complete" or circle. Complete is closer to the original Chinese meaning.

7. Though we are true paternal Hebrews, we no longer look Hebrew due to the thousands of years of intermarriage with the Chinese people.

I hope that this helps and if anyone has any questions, please feel free to write.

Zhou and Guo
