What is the history and meaning behind the name Montague?

I really like this name and may desire this name for my son in the future. But before I do that I want to know the meaning and history behind the name.

Thoughts?

What is the history and meaning behind the name Montague?
Montague is most famous from William Shakespeare's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Montague is the last name of Romeo and his family, where Juliet's last name is Capulet. Montague would make a fine boys name, either first, middle or last.
Reply:The only Montague I know of is Romeo (Shakespear's Romeo and Juliette). It was his last name. Beyond that, I don't know.
Reply:It is a surname of a famous titled English family as well as the surname of Romeo. I don't know the history of the family but it is sometimes spelt without the e at the end. I believe it was originally a French name. If you call a son Montague, there is a chance that his schoolfriends may shorten it to Monty.
Reply:ITS A NAME THAT SHAKESPEARE USED HAVE YOU READ ROMEO AND JULLIET ITS THERE UM....ITS A LAST NAME
