What is the meaning behind a name?

my boyfriend and i are trying to find out what our names mean for example say like the name james means..trustworthy and strong.

but we cant find any sites with meanings behind names.

What is the meaning behind a name?
You can try numous baby name sites. Most of the sites do have the meaning of the name and that:

http://www.babynames.com/

I recently went on this and it gave me what my name means. It's a good site.
Reply:go to www.babynames.com. i know it sounds dumb, but if you type in a name, it will give you the meaning, the origin, and what famous people have it, if any. the site is for parents looking to name their new baby, but it's also useful for this. i found that my name means "raven".
Reply:the first name in england is not really assotiated with things its more the second name like garner is a gatherer of things smith was a black smith and so on and so forth go to a heritage site that may help but thats just a guess sorry
Reply:try asking google for baby names with meanings this might help.
Reply:Most bookshops and even baby shops will stock baby name books, some of which will tell you the origins and meanings of the names. Otherwise, http://www.babynamesworld.com/ is quite good, and has loads of weird names in there as well.
Reply:If you want websites, search/Google "baby names meaning" or "baby names meanings"--there are lots of names with meanings.

Your boyfriend must be named "James." Some people would tell you it comes from "Jacob" which means "supplanter"--his name was later changed to "Israel."
