Greetings, hello, Can somebody help me with the true etymology (meaning) of the Gladys name?

Best regards British friends. I wish to ask to somebody who knows it, the true etymology (meaning) of the name Gladys. That your sources be as trustworthy as possible, please, because (in Internet) there is a chaos of several etymologies for the name Gladys. I have a relative of nearly 63 years old with this name. Thank you very much.

Greetings, hello, Can somebody help me with the true etymology (meaning) of the Gladys name?
UK answer.

I found this for you,

Gladys

Welsh and English: from the Welsh name Gwladus, which is of uncertain derivation. It has been quite widely used outside Wales in the 20th century.

hope this helps.
Reply:I believe I am correct in my explanation here .... certainly it's one I've always been told was correct......

The name GLADYS is/was primarily a Welsh name - it's meaning is 'Small Sword'.....

Apparently it is a derivative of the name CLAUDIA - A Romanian name with it's meaning to be 'lame' or 'disabled'......

However on closer inspection of the word 'Lame' - although generally understood to be a disablement .... can also mean:

[noun] a fabric interwoven with threads of metal; "she wore a gold lame dress"; [verb] ... this would make sense as any fabric interwoven with metal would obviously have a tensile strength that far outweighs ordinary fabric - sort of like a lightweight chainmetal ..... so the 'disablement' here would be the weight of the fabric/material .....

So overall I would say that Gladys is a strong name - the implication of the name is the ability to be strong in defence and withhold against attack.... I should think (as I am a great believer that people 'become' their names) that your relative is probably a feisty 'youngster' who doesn't suffer fools gladly, will challenge authority - and will robustly defend her loved ones!.... Crikey - what a terror!

Reply:I don't know, but I do know for a fact that the name Maeby means "goddess of possibilities," originating from the Greek, 蟺喂胃伪谓蠈 (prncd "ma-b毛") and 胃蔚维 (prncd "dee").
Reply: Gladys is from an old Welsh name - Gwladus, Latin version of Claudia.

Meaning :- Lame
Reply:Strange but true - in my Chambers's dictionary it tells me that it means 'lame'.
