Do you name your children for the name or the meaning?

Does the meaning of a name have any, well, umm, meaning to you?

Do you name your children for the name or the meaning?
I have put alot of thought into The name

Yelling them out, asking them to do imaginary things. making sure they roll off my tounge perfectly

but in a funny twist i love it when the meanings on the names make sence as well

I have chosen

Boy: Avalon Blaze (Kristl) which means (Island of burning flames)
Reply:I have choosen basically on the name alone but the meaning works as well.

When I was younger I really loved the fact that my name (Sarah) meant princess and my mom and dad said they just knew that they had to name me Sarah b/c not only did they simply just love the name but once they found out it meant princess it fit b/c they had 3 princes before they finally got their princess.

But my DH and I still choose the names we have decided on just mainly b/c we love the names so much.
Reply:My name is Kiara ( Kee-air-ah )

BEHINDTHENAME.COM SAYS:

Variant of CIARA (1) or CHIARA. This name first became used in 1988 after the singing duo Kiara released their song 'This Time'. It was further popularized by a character in the animated movie 'The Lion King II' (1998).

My Daughter's name is Presley Rose (Prez-lee)(Roze)

BEHINDTHENAME.COM SAYS:

Presley:

From an English surname which was originally derived from a place name meaning "priest clearing" (Old English preost and leah). This surname was borne by musician Elvis Presley (1935-1977).

Rose:

Originally a Norman form of a Germanic name, which was composed of the elements hrod "fame" and heid "kind, sort, type". It was introduced to England by the Normans in the forms Roese or Rohese. From an early date it was associated with the word for the fragrant flower rose (derived from Latin rosa). When the name was revived in the 19th century, it was probably with the flower in mind.

And a Son named Anton James, (An-tawn)(Jaymz)

Anton:

Form of Antonius (see ANTHONY).

James:

English form of the Late Latin name Iacomus which was derived from 螜伪魏蠅尾慰蟼 (Iakobos), the New Testament Greek form of the Hebrew name 讬址注植拽止讘 (Ya'aqov) (see JACOB). This was the name of two apostles in the New Testament. The first was Saint James the Greater, the apostle John's brother, who was beheaded under Herod Agrippa in the Book of Acts. The second was James the Lesser, son of Alphaeus. Another James (known as James the Just) is also mentioned in the Bible as being the brother of Jesus.

Since the 13th century this form of the name has been used in England, though it became more common in Scotland, where it was borne by several kings. In the 16th century the Scottish king James VI inherited the English throne, becoming the first ruler of all Britain, and the name grew much more popular. Famous bearers include the explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779), the inventor of the steam engine James Watt (1736-1819), and the novelist and poet James Joyce (1882-1941). This name has also been borne by six American presidents. A notable fictional bearer is the British spy James Bond, created by author Ian Fleming.

I got pregnant with Presley While in a rock band, the king

of rock IS elvis presley, and so presley it was. Rose was just something we both liked and we have a thing with flowers for girls' middle names..

Anton is just a name I liked.. I was picking between Deondre, Anton, And Andre.. Anton won over our hearts. James is his daddy's first name.
Reply:I choose a name first and foremost for the name itself and the culture it comes from. The meaning, while often important, is secondary when it comes to choosing a baby name.
Reply:I love the name Mallory, but it means bad luck. I'm having trouble deciding whether I should use it or not, just because of the meaning.

So I'm going to say the meaning plays a big part. It's like a blessing for the newborn.
Reply:First child was for the name, we specifically named him after a famous historical person.

the second name we picked for the meaning. We wanted a name that meant gift from God. It was either Corbin or Matthew. Matthew won. :)
Reply:I named my daughter for both the name and the meaning.

When I have my next child I plan on doing the same again.

Most names have good meanings though, so it's not hard to find one you like lol.
Reply:i like them for both the names and the meaning

both my girls have names that feature in songs so when i hear the songs i think of them
Reply:I named all my children because i liked the name if the meaning happen to be nice it was a bonus I wouldn't not like a name because of it's meaning .
Reply:We chose our son's name based on meaning as well as the fact that we just liked it. Over-used or not his name fits him well and he has thus far lived up to the meaning.
Reply:The meaning, we are naming our daughter Annabelle which means "easy to love" and that's what she will be :)
Reply:I wouldn't choose a name based on meaning alone.... I don't like or dislike my own name b/c of it's meaning.
Reply:i wanted a name that was heard of but not used lot in todays picking of names.her name is Allison
