How important is name meaning to you?

Is it really important to you when choosing a name? Would you disgard a name based on its meaning? Why is the meaning important or not important?

How important is name meaning to you?
It all depends. For example one of my favorite name combinations (Brayden Donovan) originally meaned "Brave Dark Warrior" so I simply changed It a bit to "Brave Warrior" Some names have horrible meanings......I mean bad so I would never use them. But I usually just fall In Love with a name and If It's meaning Isn't bad I keep It. Or If I come to a name like Landon which means "Long Journey" I try and make a Biblical connection to It. EXAMPLE: When your walking with God It often seems like you're walking up a Long Hill or going through a Long Journey/Process but In the end all of that hard work will pay off when you reach him! I think It's a fun way to make a name special.

God Bless~

Reply:Meaning isn't the first thing I look for in a name. But I do consider it.

For instance, my absolute FAVORITE boy name is Luke. The meaning is "from Lucania". It's not so significant but it's not bad. Yet, I still love it!

Another example...I love the name Grant. And it means "Great"! The meaning adds a huge plus for me.

It plays a small role when I choose names. Most of my favorite names are in honor of family and friends anyways. So technically they will have two meanings - one is the common, type of meaning but the other is how I truly feel about the name.

EDIT: If I gave my child the name Cameron (which means "Crooked Nose") I doubt someone will come up to him and say "OMG!! YOUR NAME MEANS CROOKED NOSE!" It won't affect his life. Unless of course they are baby name nerds =)
Reply:I think that it is important that it means something important to you in one language or another. For instance, my oldest daughters name means "dark" in Greek, which isn't very favorable, but it means "giving" in Italian which is a characteristic that I strive for my children to have.
Reply:its not that important, its nice when it has a special meaning but not a priority to me. my husband and i both liking the sound and agreeing on it is more important. i would not disregaurd a name for its meaning.
Reply:No, I wouldn't disgard a name because of meaning but I also wouldn't add a name that I hate but has a really nice meaning, I choose names that I love and if they have a good meaning then all the better!
Reply:Depends.. I first go by what it sounds like, then how it looks spelled out, and lastly by it's meaning. It doesn't "need" to have a beautiful meaning, BUT definitely nothing really weird and offensive.
Reply:you dont have to have the perfect meaning, but should have a good name that could suite a person from babyhood to adulthood...i wldnt worry about the meaning too much, but have it as icing on the cake
Reply:It's somewhat important. I like the name Paloma because it means "dove". But if there was a name that didn't have a great meaning, like Jackson/Jaxson, and I still liked it, I would use it.
Reply:It's not the most important thing, but if it means something weird, etc. I wouldn't use it.

For example, Mallory mean "unhappy, unlucky"
Reply:I think the meaning is kinda important. If it meant something really random like cat or flower, i would probably discard it.
Reply:i wld disgard it if the name didnt have a postive meaning, if it meant death or devil or anythign like that i wld nvr consideer it
Reply:We are practicing Roman Catholics - and our children were named Sarah Ann %26amp; Aaron John accordingly. The names are biblical!
Reply:Doesn't mean everything to me, but does make me like it even more when the name has really nice meaning.
Reply:I do not think the meanings are tha important Mary means bitter but Merry means mirthful they sound just alike
Reply:I don't think it's too terribly important. But I would definitely get rid of a name like Marie, which means "bitter".
Reply:if there was a really bad meaning, I would not use it, but I would mainly base the names on how they sound.
Reply:I go for the ''cool names'' as in unique. But it mostly would be about your thought. I like unique!
Reply:If it ment something really stupid, maybe. But really it's about how the name sounds not what it means.
Reply:I don't think the name meaning really matters.
Reply:Name meaning is nothing to me. I only care about the name itself.

Reply:idk guess i wouldnt care for a name thet ment "stupid" of "devil spawn"
Reply:good point. so they can call u what ever that name is
Reply:same,same,same,same,same, UNIQUE, same, same, same
